The focus of Birstall Thursday Group's Summer Outing was a visit to Southwell Minster.
We set off by coach in glorious sunshine to be met by the Rev. John Hucknall ex-Superintendent minister of the Circuit. John had arranged for us to join him for coffee and chat in the Minster refectory. He was asked "What was the difference between a Minster and a Cathedral?" John explained that many years ago many large churches were built and called a Minster, over the years some of these Minsters were elevated to Cathedral status and each cathedral had a Bishop.
Coffee was followed by a tour, led by John, of Southwell Minster / Cathedral, we could not have had a better guide. John had grown up on his father's farm not far from Southwell, although a Methodist he eventually became a choirboy and attended the Cathedral School. His love and pride in the building was extremely infectious and we enjoyed an hour and a half exploring and learning about the beautiful architecture, stained glass windows, small chapels and many other features of the Minster.
We can heartily recommend a visit to the Minster which is only a 40 minute drive from Birstall.
