As a mother of sons, the story of Esau and Jacob - twins who were fighting each other whilst still in the womb - is one of my favourites.  It's a story of trickery and deceit, of falling out and (eventually) of getting on again.  We made "twin pictures";  collages of Esau and Jacob (they weren't identical twins and Esau was much hairier than Jacob!) and clay bowls to remind us of the bowl of lentil stew which Esau exchanged for his birthright.  Highlight of the session was the tug of war down the church aisle!

In our first session in March, we took a Messy look at the story of Abraham and Sarah led us into themes of journeys and sandy deserts.  Rather than our normal Messy tea we made our own pack-up tea ready for our journey.  In our celebration we packed our bags again and set off round the church before pitching camp under a parachute tent to hear the story of God's promise to Abraham and Sarah that they would become parents of a huge family stretching over the generations.

The story of Noah's ark gave plenty of potential for crafts based on animals and on rainbows.  When it came to our worship celebration, we bounced our prayers up to God on our own rainbow.  Tea was a particularly delicious fish pie.

Messy Church was very busy on Saturday, exploring the story that tells how the world that God made good became spoiled.  Snakes featured big time - not a session for anyone with a snake phobia.  013015018007011

Birstall Messy Church are making their own contribution to the Biblefresh initiative  by hosting a series of sessions that focus on the main stories from the book of Genesis from now until Easter. Naturally we started at the beginning with the Creation. From making our own Garden of Eden (complete with dinosaurs) to creating our own creatures (including the incredibly useful hoover creature) to learning how to do hand massage for 7th day relaxation, a great time was had by all. It was wonderful to welcome families back into 2011.
